Outdoor Gear Care Tips – How to Clean a Backpack Like a Pro

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

You tried, after that last hiking “incident” you swore it would never happen again. But who could have guessed that the rock would have been so slippery? Now, your best backpack is filthy, dirty both inside and out. And it’s still sitting outdoors because of the spoiled food smells. What should you do now: clean it or throw it away? Once you know how to clean a backpack using the following tips, you never have to worry about throwing a “nasty” backpack ever again.

Cleaning a Backpack Inside

o Turn the backpack completely inside out. If it has metal stays, remove them and set them aside. Dump any debris out onto a newspaper. Use a soft brush to clean off any dried dirt or residue. If you have one available you can always, use a vacuum with a brush attachment.

o Wash off the interior using a little mild detergent with a damp sponge or cloth.

o Be sure to clean in all the nooks and crannies and seams. Use an old toothbrush to dig in deep.

o Rinse using cold water and clean sponge or cloth.

o Use paper towels to dry the interior of the bag completely.

Cleaning a Backpack Outside

1. Turn the backpack right side out now. Use a dry brush to remove any loose dirt or dried mud.

2. Wash off the exterior using a little mild detergent (dishwashing liquid with degreaser) with a damp sponge or cloth.

3. Be sure to clean in all the pockets, flaps and seams. Use an old toothbrush to clean around the edging.

4. Rinse using cold water and clean sponge or cloth. You can submerge the whole pack into tub of cold water or use a hand held shower head or hose to remove all traces of soap both inside and out.

5. Hang the backpack upside down to air dry for several days, preferably outdoors. DO NOT use the dryer.

6. If the backpack is still funky smelling, spray with Fabreze® or hunters’ Scent-A-Way®. But be careful because these may remove waterproofing chemicals like Scotch-Guard ®

7. Store in a cool dry place. Don’t cover with plastic.

Cleaning a Camping Backpack in the Washer (if all else fails)

o DO NOT soak in soapy water. This could cause the layers of the backpack to delaminate or any waterproofing to deteriorate.

o Follow the steps 1-3 from above.

o Place the backpack in the washer. Wash with cold water only on the delicate cycle with a very mild laundry detergent (Ivory Flakes or Woolite). Rinse and let air dry for several days.

o NOTE: This method is for using at the last resort ONLY. Cleaning a camping backpack in the washer can cause the materials in the pack to fall apart. So machine wash at your own risk!

Backpack Zipper Care

Clean a backpack zipper is really easy. First, use an old toothbrush to clean out any sand, salt or dirt and mud from the zipper teeth. Vacuum if necessary to remove debris. Trim any stray or loose threads to prevent tangling. Spray very lightly with a silicone spray, occasionally to lube.

Now that you know how to clean your best backpack, you never have to toss out a malodorous backpack again.

In-depth information and a complete guide to selecting the best backpack Providing you with all you need to know in regards to a vast array of backpacks from hiking backpacks to office backpacks and plenty more.

Creating Outdoor Living Spaces in Arizona

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Since the weather in Arizona is nice enough to enjoy the outdoors almost year round you can extended your home by creating an extension of your home to the outdoors. Why stay indoors when so much of the time you can be outdoors enjoying additional open spaces that surround your home? Generally, you will wish to spend more of your outdoor time in the backyard of your home so let’s focus on the different things you can do to create the backyard of your dreams.

Summer Enjoyment

In the hotter months you won’t find yourself spending much time in the outdoors if you don’t have a pool. It would probably be too hot except for night time and then the hottest parts of the summer it is still not comfortable enough even at night to be spending much time outdoors.

Your pool can be the center of the entertainment in these hotter months. Creating a pool for maximum use can easily be accomplished. You can build a pool with tables to sit around, a swim up bar and/or grill area, large beach areas for chaise lounges or sitting in just inches of water to stay cool are just some of the ideas for your pool. When creating the pool area think about inserts for basketball hoops, volleyball nets and umbrellas to shield from the sun.

Building a BBQ area can include not only a grill but flat cooking or burner surfaces, refrigerators, sinks, storage areas and more. Your BBQ area can have a sit around bar so guests and family members can sit and enjoy themselves while the grilling is being done. Remember summer color and maybe a ceiling fan under the patio for air circulation, light for nighttime enjoyment as well as maybe including a sound system outside or even a video system so you can enjoy your favorite sport, movie or television show while spending time outside.

Fall/Winter Enjoyment

So in the winter when the water is too cold if you do not have a heater for your pool is a great time to enjoy the rest of the yard almost all day and into the late nights. Extending your pool to include a spa or an above ground spa if you prefer to have some water recreation in the cooler months is a great idea. Not only will you really enjoy the cooler days and nights around the BBQ, audio and visual areas but what about adding a fireplace outdoors. You could add a whole area dedicated to a stack type fireplace or a fire pit. Even a portable fire pit works great if you don’t want the expense of building a full blown fireplace. Either way, it is a great area of your extended living space to enjoy a warm cup of coffee, hot cocoa or your favorite beverage.

Kids can have so many options as well in their extended living spaces. Think about a nice playground area, sand box area or an above or in ground trampoline. All super fun ideas that the kids love. If you have small children or entertain invited guests with small children, please be sure and have security in place for the pool area and always watch children around water. Arizona has too many unnecessary drownings.

Enjoy your home with thousands of additional square feet in your backyard!
